Looking back at 100 years of Yamato Scale

With the year 2020 approaching, Yamato are preparing to celebrate an impressive 100 years of their work around the globe.

The company was originally founded in Japan in 1920 as the Weighing Division of Kawanishi Kikai, before a reorganisation took place in 1945 which saw the company officially became known as Yamato Scale. While its headquarters remain in Japan today, Yamato has become a global institution, with offices in Dubai, New Delhi, China, America, Mexico and across Europe. The UK division, which opened in Leeds in 1994, continues to operate today as a family-owned business.

Once set up, Yamato very quickly established itself as a world leader for weighing in the food, chemical and heavy industries, having developed the first multi-head weigher by the end of the 1970s. In 1988, the company achieved another first with its use of intelligent mixing software in its weighers, allowing for precise weighing of mixed products. This was closely followed by their inception of touch screen technology on machines, allowing for easier handling and controlling of the weighers. The innovative technology the company uses has continued to grow over the years, demonstrating Yamato as a pioneer for weighing solutions.

Thanks to Yamato’s expansive range of high-quality products, the company has been able to revolutionise the way industries work. The Sigma Series was launched in 2005, allowing for the weighing of just about any product, from food to hardware. This technology gave those industries using it the power to increase their productivity, as well as increasing employee safety and minimising environmental impact by reducing the risk of errors and waste. Future products from Yamato have continued to boost speed and productivity while maintaining safety, hygiene and environmental standards.

It may have been 100 years since Yamato began, but the company’s milestones keep coming. In 2018, the company opened its South Africa division, marking a continuation of the brand’s expansion across the world.

Moving forward, Yamato plans to develop further by expanding its sales and developing its technology to new strengths. There’s also a keen focus on how Yamato can help to reduce waste within different industries in response to growing awareness of environmental issues across the world. Recent years have seen the development of the I Series checkweigher, which features 30% reduced power consumption, as well as their X-Ray machines which can cut waste by allowing users to identify and remove contaminants. Products like these highlighting Yamato’s aim to improve efficiency for companies, helping to reduce their environmental impact and cut costs with their machines.
