What else happened while we have been innovating in the food processing industry?[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”7739″ alt=”Innovation 100 years”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Here are 10 of our favourite historical moments, that have had a significant impact on all our lives \u2013 one from each decade over the past 100 years.<\/p>\n

Remember that this is very much a subjective list. No doubt you will have your favourites so don\u2019t beat us up if yours isn\u2019t on this list:<\/p>\n

  1. Colour television (1928)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The first mechanical colour TV transmission was made by John Logie Baird in July 1928, but the first commercially successful electronic system developed by RCA didn\u2019t begin broadcasting until 1953.<\/p>\n

    1. Programmable computer (1936)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The first programmable computer was called the Z1 and was designed by Konrad Zuse. This was mechanical in nature. The first digital programmable computer was \u2018Colossus\u2019 developed at Bletchley Park in the UK in 1943 as a code breaking device.<\/p>\n

      1. Penicillin successfully used for the first time to treat a patient with an infection (1941)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Penicillin was first isolated by Alexander Fleming in 1928 and was first used to treat an infection in a policeman named Albert Alexander in February 1941. It was difficult to produce so penicillin didn\u2019t become commercially available until 1944.<\/p>\n

        1. The first organ transplant (1954)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          The first organ to be successfully transplanted was a kidney. The surgery was performed on Richard Herrick by Dr Joseph Murray using a kidney from Herrick\u2019s identical twin brother Ronald.<\/p>\n

          1. First man on the moon (Neil Armstrong, 20 July 1969)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            This is one for the conspiracy theorists out there and no explanation is really needed.<\/p>\n

            1. First email sent (1971)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              The first email was sent by computer engineer Ray Tomlinson from one machine to another across the ARPANET computer network, a predecessor of the World Wide Web, in 1971.<\/p>\n

              1. Invention of the World Wide Web (1989)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                Scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989 while he was working for CERN in Switzerland. He wrote the first web browser in 1990 and the World Wide Web was released outside CERN in 1991.<\/p>\n

                1. Nelson Mandela released from prison (1990)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  Nelson Mandela had been imprisoned for 27 years before his release from Victor Verster Prison by South African president FW de Klerk on 11 February 1990 following the legalisation of the African National Congress (ANC).<\/p>\n

                  1. The first video upload to YouTube (2005)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                    Called Me at the Zoo, the first YouTube video was uploaded by the site\u2019s co-founder Jawed Karim. It was an 18 second clip shot at San Diego Zoo uploaded on 23 April 2005.<\/p>\n

                    1. The first full artificial heart implant (2011)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                      A 40-year-old father, Matthew Green, was the recipient of a Total Artificial Heart (TAH) after a six-hour operation. Although not the first artificial heart it was the first time a UK patient was given a full implant \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and allowed to return home from hospital.<\/p>\n

                      That\u2019s just a taste of what the human race has achieved over the past 100 years. Who knows what the next century may bring.<\/p>\n
